When the houses along Western Esplanade were originally built, they were to be used as luxurious holiday homes with the exciting bonus of an upstairs bathroom and both hot and cold running sea or fresh water on tap, and even a telephone! This lavishness was priced at four guineas a week, rising to seven guineas in the winter. During the mid 1920’s these prices rivalled a week at the Grand Hotel in Brighton where rates reached one pound a night. In 1939, the houses were painted black to be camouflaged from enemy aircraft. The villas were commandeered by the military and various officers were housed all along the row. After the war, all of the houses returned to their more suited shade of white.
Today Western Esplanade is a private road and is uniquely situated on the beachfront south of the A259 coast road and close to Hove Lagoon and Wish Park. The house is accessible for Brighton & Hove stations, which are 3.1 miles and 1.8 miles away respectively. There are many highly regarded schools and colleges in the local area, including Roedean School, Brighton College, Hurstpierpoint College, Burgess Hill School for Girls, Steyning Grammar School and the city is home to both the University of Sussex and Brighton University.
